A STAINED BEECHWOOD SUSSEX CHAIR ATTRIBUTABLE TO FORD MADDOX BROWN

19th century, of bamboo design with circular rush seat, 81.5cm high x 50cm wide x 43cm deep

Note: Pre Raphaelite artist and designer Ford Maddox Brown (1821-1893) was a founder member of what became Morris & Co in 1861 is credited with introducing a circular seat to the Sussex model.

The front right leg is broken at the top. The back stretcher may be replaced. There is some wear to the the rush seat and some give/depression. The structure is slightly wobbly. Some further surface marks and scratches consistent with age and use. Good overall appearance.
