Note: The Belgian town of Spa became hugely popular in the late 18th century after the Holy Roman Emperor Joseph II christened it ‘Le Cafe de l’Europe’. It attracted wealthy aristocracy from across the continent and England who would visit Europe’s first Casinos. The Bois de Spa boxes, often painted with scenes of the town, became popular with the tourists and part of a burgeoning trade in luxury goods. Antoine Le Loup was a native of Spa and became known for his finely detailed monochrome views.
