Provenance: A label to the underside of the table reads: 'Table belonging to Mrs Paul Wentworth (Lydia Coggswell) purchased by Mr & Mrs Wentworth about 1814. Paternal grandparents of Mrs Roxana A Wentworth Bowen'. The label to the back reads: 'Paul Wentworth and Lydia Coggswell. Wedding Furniture March 1814. Given me by my Aunt Mary R. A. W. B.' This suggests it was passed from Mrs Roxana Atwater Wentworth Bowen (1854-1935) to her daughter Roxana Wentworth Bowen.
The Les Watts Collection.
Note: John (1738-1818) and Thomas (1771-1848) Seymour were father and son cabinet makers who emigrated from England to Maine in 1785 and then settled in Boston in 1794. The design of this table is comparable to a pattern in Thomas Sheraton's The Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Drawing Book. It is therefore likely that this form was considered the height of fashion in contemporary Boston. Similar examples can be found in Robert Mussey's The Furniture Masterworks of John & Thomas Seymour, published 2003.
