Note: The 1879 edition of 'Poems of Rural Life' bears an inscription from 'H O Lock'. The edition of 'Old Dorset' was gifted to the vendors grandfather, Arthur H. Lock, by his brother Walter Lock, who was warden of Keble College, Oxford. Both Lock's attended William Barnes School in Dorchester and were friends with Thomas Hardy. Arthur became Hardy's lawyer at Lock, Reed and Lock solicitors, and was referred to by Hardy as 'Lawyer Lock!'.
