engraved 'Canova' to the front of the base and indistinctly signed 'Ballon' to the ground, the cherub figured sleeping with a bow and quiver resting underneath the hound's paw, 32cm high x 59cm wide x 46cm deep

Note: A comparable group by the Italian artist Odoardo Fantacchiotti (1811-1877) titled “Amore et Fedelta” (“Love and Faithfulness”) features a similarly figured cherub reclining against a dog, this group was sold by Wannenes Art Auctions in Genoa for €110,000 in 2016.

Note: The ‘Warwick Vase’ is a Roman marble vase that was discovered by Gavin Hamilton in the grounds of Hadrian's Villa, Tivoli, in around 1771. The vase gains its name as it was originally displayed at Warwick Castle, then owned by George Greville, 2nd Earl of Warwick and Hamilton’s nephew. It now resides in The Burrell Collection, Glasgow, Scotland.
