A CHINESE SOAPSTONE 'MYTHICAL BEASTS' SEAL

attributable to Yang Yuxuan, Qing dynasty, the three beasts carved with bulbous eyes and snarling, painted with black details to the eyes and hair, with finely detailed coats, incised cloud motifs and raised spines, bearing the seal mark to the base, 6cm high x 3.2cm square

Note: The seal reputedly races to 'Wang Daxun', a cleric in the imperial court of Kangxi.

Provenance: A private collection Oxford, curated over fifty years.

In predominantly good condition, without major damage or restoration. There are a number of small chips to the edges and corners. Light surface scratching and wear apparent. Remains of old pigment. Natural striations and inclusions.
