Note: For similar examples of Portuguese beds incorporating 17th century elements, see those illustrated in J.F. Da Silva, Nascimento, Leitos e Camilhas Portugueses, 1950, Figs. 17, 19 and 21, and further examples with similar carving in the guide to the Museu-Escola de Artes Decorativas Portuguesas, 2001, pp.234-235.

In largely good and structurally sound condition throughout. There are six spindle elements detached from the back as they are loose in there fittings. The remaining all detach for transport and remain in place when assembled. There are are few cracks, chips and small losses, some of which are to the headboard and thus result in the instability of the detached elements. Some cracks and old restorations to the pillars. Wear and marks to the mattress and divan. Wear concentrated around the feet. A rare piece with interesting history and in perfectly stable condition that comes to pieces for transport.

Please see the additional images available on request.

The mattress measures 196cm x 162cm with re-entrant corners.
