Note: Tucked in a pocket of rolling countryside between Corfe Castle and Swanage on the Isle of Purbeck, Dunshay Manor became the home of renowned society painter George Spencer Watson, his wife Hilda and their daughter Mary in 1923. The gardens at Dunshay were a constant source of inspiration for the artist, indeed the 1926 work ‘Mary in the gardens, Dunshay (Drat them goats!)’ which shows a young Mary running barefoot alongside a herd of goats, is painted from the same point of view as the work offered here.
