Provenance: A private British collection.

Note: The manner of painting is reminiscent of works by the Italian Jesuit court painter Giuseppe Castiglione (1688-1766). Castiglione's paintings fused European techniques of perspective and shading with traditional Chinese ink painting, which greatly influenced official court painting at that time.

Vases of this form, especially those with underglaze red decoration, are especially rare. Underglaze copper red pigments are notoriously difficult to fire successfully and the combination of cobalt blue represents a further challenge.

A similar example from the L. van der Heyden à Hauzeur collection was sold, Christie's London, 9 December 1985, Lot 124.

A closely related vase is illustrated in 'Imperial Perfection, The Palace Porcelain of Three Chinese Emperors Kangxi-Yongzheng-Qianlong, A selection from the Wang Zing Lou Collection', Sings Gallery, Hong Kong, 2004, Catalogue no. 27, with a preface by Robert Jacobson and an introduction by Julian Thompson.  The catalogue accompanies an exhibition which was held at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, Minneapolis, USA.

An underglaze blue, red and white lantern vase painted with a continuous landscape was sold in these rooms, 11th February 2010.
