Note: This composition is known in various forms. The best known record of the work is in Pentworth House, while in 1986, a panel with Piero Corsini in New York, was published as the original. A version of the painting can be traced back to the Duke of Buckingham in the 1620s, at which time it was copied by Peter Oliver for King Charles I. David Ekserdjian in Correggio, 1997, p. 139-42, discusses these pictures and suggests that all versions are based on a drawing by Correggio.
