Note: This composition is known in various forms. The best known record of the work is in Pentworth House, while in 1986, a panel with Piero Corsini in New York, was published as the original. A version of the painting can be traced back to the Duke of Buckingham in the 1620s, at which time it was copied by Peter Oliver for King Charles I. David Ekserdjian in Correggio, 1997, p. 139-42, discusses these pictures and suggests that all versions are based on a drawing by Correggio.

There is some clear wear to the painting. The picture surface is stable, but there is extensive craquelure throughout the artwork and some warping to the panel support. The painting would benefit greatly from being cleaned. Please see additional images available on request.
