AN ATTIC BLACK-FIGURED TERRACOTTA AMPHORA

6th-3rd century BC, decorated to both sides with the god Dionysus with attendant Silenus and maenads, highlighted with tones of white and red, with anthemion and leaf border to the neck, Greek key and foliate border to the base, raised on a turned foot, 42cm high x 27cm diameter

Provenance: A private Christchurch deceased Estate.

Note: TL test by Oxford Authentication, sample N125e23, last firing 1900-2900 years ago, certificate dated 28th April 2025.

This amphora has been extensively smashed and glued back together.

The repair is rudimentary and may benefit from further restoration.

Oxford Authentication tested both rim and foot.

There are no documents to validate the provenance.


The item has been consigned from a Christchurch deceased estate - the late owner had collected antiques and decorative items for 30 years of all types, from 18th Century English porcelain to a Chinese Wucai bowl we sold earlier this year. 

We sadly have no further information about where she acquired the amphora from.
