Benjamin Gray (1676-1764) was an eminent clockmaker who with skill and prowess earned King George II's Royal Warrant. Justin Vulliamy (1712-1797) came to England from Switzerland in about 1730 and began working for Gray. Justin later was to marry Gray’s daughter Mary, and went into partnership with him from around 1743, from which point they were signing their work with both names. The pair worked from 68 Pall Mall, London and their names are now synonymous with clocks of the highest quality. After Gray's death both his father-in-law’s business and his Royal Warrant passed to Vulliamy.

This clock appears complete but please note that we have not run the movement for an extended period of time and do not guarantee that it is in fully working order.

The movement runs briefly when pendulum swung and does strike on a bell.

The repeat mechanism is complete with hammer and bell but does not engage when cord pulled. The hammers appear bent and one appears to be repaired.

No winding handle or case keys are present.

The case doors are fitted with locks.

The case has two areas of detached moulding/veneer (side and to left of dial), which are present and one detached spandrel to rear door, which is also present.

The case has scuffing and wear throughout commensurate with age and use.

The handle and domed top of the case is loose and there is cracking to the moulding bar to one side of the dome.

The clock is 34cm high handle up, 29cm to top of ebonised wood.

Email question 30/7/25 - the clock does not appear to have been dropped - the feet are not distorted, the brackets holding the movement are not bent and glass is not cracked/replaced.
