‘ANN LOVEDAY’S RIDDLE BOOK’

a late 18th/early 19th century half leather bound journal containing 642 handwritten riddles in a variety of hands, the front flyleaf titled in pencil, the binding with brown leather spine and marbled boards, 21.5cm x 17cm; together with a companion marbled paper bound pamphlet of Answers; and a quantity of loose 18th and 19th Century handwritten riddles, notes and letters, including two 19th Century printed riddles by Mallam, Tobacconist, High-street, Oxford (a lot)

Provenance: Ann Loveday, thence by family descent.

Riddle Book - leather spine very dry, bumped, scuffed and with slight worm damage at top. Marbled card covers faded and stained and lacking leather to corners. Binding slightly damaged - front hinge cracked open internally. 182 hand numbered and completed pages, a further approx 72 blank pages in volume. 

Pamphlet - marbled paper bound, appears original and not lacking covers. 30 completed pages, about half the volume, rest of pages blank.

Ephemera - there are a further 47 pieces of paper ephemera with this lot, mostly hand written in various hands, various sizes
