18th century, bearing the arms of Brydges, Duke of Chandos, within an Imari palette border, 22cm diameter; together with another Chinese export porcelain Imari palette plate, 23cm diameter (2)

This armorial plate was part of a lavish service made for James Brydges, advanced to the Dukedom in 1719 and well known as 'Princely Chandos'. In J. Goldsmith-Phillips 'China-Trade Porcelain' he is described as 'one of the most notable figures of 18th century England' (page 84). 

The armorial plate is chipped to the rim and has a hairline crack.

The other is chipped to the rim with a hairline crack and fritting.

Some rubbing to decoration and gilt throughout. Wear and light surface scratching consistent with age and use.
