This armorial plate was part of a lavish service made for James Brydges, advanced to the Dukedom in 1719 and well known as 'Princely Chandos'. In J. Goldsmith-Phillips 'China-Trade Porcelain' he is described as 'one of the most notable figures of 18th century England' (page 84).
