The pieces are made from bone. 

The item is in fair used condition. It bears surface marks to the leather travelling case and the box when closed. The mechanism is in working order. There is wear to each square where the piece would be placed. Some tarnishing to the brass hinges. Minor loss of colour to the pieces.
