John Vandeleur, DSO and Bar (1903 -1988) was commissioned into the Irish Guards as a Second Lieutenant in 1931, he rose to senior command during the Second World War. As Acting Commanding Officer of the 2nd Armoured Battalion, Irish Guards, he served under his cousin, Brigadier Joe Vandeleur, during the breakout of XXX Corps in Operation Market-Garden. In 1945 he was appointed Acting Commander of the British 5th Guards Armoured Brigade. He retired from the Army in 1949.

His wartime service was later portrayed in the 1977 film A Bridge Too Far, in which Giles Vandeleur was played by Michael Byrne and Joe Vandeleur by Michael Caine.
