Born in 1881, Gosse was the youngest child of the well-known poet and critic Sir Edmund Gosse. She trained at St John's Wood Art School and the Royal Academy of Art.
In 1908, Gosse met Walter Sickert, who influenced her and encouraged the younger artist to learn etching. Gosse was taught by Sickert at the private art school he ran on Hampstead Road, which became known as Rowlandson House. Gosse's time at the school was successful, and she went on to become its co-principal until its closure in 1914.
Gosse exhibited at the New English Art Club from 1911 onwards. Her subject matter, which often tilts towards interiors and atmospheric street scenes, shows Sickert's influence. This also manifests itself in the style and modernist immediacy of her work, which nonetheless carries a personality and vibrancy all of its own.
