The watercolour drawing is offered along with Algernon Charles Swinburne's 'The Springtide of Life: Poems of Childhood', illustrated by Arthur Rackham (London: William Heinemann, 1918), signed by the illustrator, no. 375 from an edition of 765, with original vellum gilt binding, a photograph depicting the vendor's family before the watercolour, along with a letter from Rackham concerning the current artwork.

The current watercolour is based on the illustration of the same name from Rackham's edition of Swinburne's 'The Springtide of Life'. It was executed especially for Kerrison Preston Esq. (1884-1974), after the book's original publication. Preston was a noted connoisseur and scholar with a particular interest in William Blake and the Pre-Raphaelites.

The watercolour is in very good, original condition. The colours are well preserved, with minimal fading. There is some foxing to the sheet, as visible in main photography, but we feel that this is mainly a deliberate aesthetic effect. The period frame bears some minor loss and abrasion. Essentially, though, it is ready to hang. Please see additional images available on request.
