First edition, 4 vols., including the Appendix to vol. II, 8vo., with 48 plates and 8 folding (2 at the end of each vol.), later blue half straight grain morocco, blue cloth boards, t.e.g., by Sangorski & Sutcliffe, ownership inscriptions on the half titles of vols. I, II and III, some foxing to the plates throughout, small tears to the inner margins of some of the folding maps, book plates of Charles Crofton- Atkins [4] Note: The first published account of the voyages of the Beagle, vol. III, with the title "Journal of researches into the geology and natural history of the various countries visited by H.M.S. Beagle" is the first major work published by Darwin. Demand for the third volume so exceeded that for the first two volumes that it had to be rapidly reissued in 1839 as a publication in its own right with a substantially different title.
