As industrialists, inventors and scientists they were responsible for major advances in technology and industrial applications. Armstrong founded Armstrong Whitworth and lived in the first house powered by hydroelectricity. Nasmyth was also a philosopher and famous for his development of the steam hammer. Ronalds is credited with being the first electrical engineer and created the first working telegraph, for which he was knighted.
