UNUSUAL IBO (IGBO) OGBA (OGBAH) BRASS ANKLET, Imo State, Nigeria, late 19th/ early 20th Century, good dark patina, overall geometric design, 14cm dia. x 10cm high Provenance: The information supplied by the dealer from whom this was purchased included the following: This "Ibo Ogba is a very unusual shape and design that was one determining factor in my buying the piece … ... The style and variation in the Ibo area of Imo State are extensive to say the least . The description of the piece was given to me by my wife Amara`s aunt who lives in the Ideato village near Owerri in Imo State. This was made for her grandmother who was an "Adaezi" (Chief's daughter) . The family are very aware of traditional religious practices and her description appeared valid; and given the age and condition of the piece I have no reason to doubt its provenance." Cylindrical and disc form, both sides punched with geometric and concentric decoration. Hammered into shape and fitted onto the girl by a specialist intinerant smith. These Anklets were considered prestigeous on account of the costly material from which they were made and because the woman was unable to undertake normal domestic duties. A woman wearing Ogba increased her own social status and that of her husband and father. Another view is that this piece may also have served as a form of currency
