O.B.E 1914/15 TRIO TO MAJOR G C ANN RAF / BROTHER RECOMMENDED FOR THE VICTORIA CROSS George Charles Ann was born in 1886, the son of the late Ernest Charles and Edith, daughter of Sir Thomas George Augustus Parkyns, 5th Baronet. Ann was educated at Oratory School and Exeter College Oxford. Commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the 5th Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, he landed in France on 13th April 1915. Transferred to the Royal Flying Corps and later Royal Airforce, serving as a Staff Officer. Mentioned in despatches on 16th January 1918 for service in Egypt and awarded the O.B.E in the New Year's Honours, 1st January 1919. Ann's brother, Major Crathorne Edward Isham Charlton Ann RFC is noted in Burkes Landed Gentry as: " Despatches twice and recommend for V.C.". The final MID was rescuing men from SS Arcadian when she was torpedoed on 15th April 1917. Chrathorne was attempting to rescue men when he drowned, he had been on route to train pilots in Egypt. It is very likely that the MID award is a downgrade from the Victoria Cross. Sold with associated research Condition=EF.
