CONNAUGHT RANGERS AND 2 / CANADIAN INFANTRY GROUP to SJT J M Allen / with original documents John Matthews Allen was born in Cardiff, Wales. Allen saw service in the Boer War with the Connaught Rangers. Serving with the 1st battalion as Pte before promotion to Sergeant. Awarded the Queens South Africa with bars Cape Colony, Tugela Heights, Orange Free State and Relief of Lady Smith. Also awarded the Kings South Africa Medal with bars South Africa 1901 and South Africa 1902. After discharge from the Army, he emigrated to Canada and settled in Peterborough, Ontario. Service papers online note he was an Insurance agent, but pay book states Electrical Engineer. He attested for the Canadian Army on 22nd November 1914, stating he had previously served 21 years with the Connaught Rangers and three years with 57 Regiment. He served in England and France entitled to the 1914/15 Star. Eventually discharged aged 46 in Kingston, Ontario on 23rd May 1918, due to no longer being physically fit. He claimed a quarterly pension until summer 1942 when he passed away. The grouping includes his original discharge documents, pay book and a letter concerning his pension after his death. A school of Military Engineering is also included from his time in the Connaught's, dated 1892. With Sergeant stripe and ribbon bar.
