GREAT WAR TRIO AND 1935 CORONATION MEDAL to Lt Commr E W H Blake RN - Killed while serving on HMS Victory in Dry Dock Edward William Herford Blake was born on 11th September 1889, in the Falkland Islands. He joined the Royal Navy aged 18 in 1908. He trained as a Gunnery Officer Sub Lieutenant 1909, Lieutenant 1910. During the Great War, he served on Theseus, Challenger and Lion. In January 1918, Blake was promoted to Lieutenant commander and posted to HMS New Zealand. He survived the war and in the Post War years married Lettice Audrey Marriott. He continued to serve until he was placed on the retired list on 11th June 1935. When the Second War Broke out, Blake volunteered to come out of retirement and serve on a shore. He was serving in Portsmouth on HMS Victory, when on the 20th April 1940 a lone Luftwaffe plane dropped a single bomb which slightly damaged HMS Victory. Tragically Blake was killed, the only casualty.
