MILITARY CROSS AND PAIR to Lieut B J Harvey DLI / Somme MC Martinpuich Benjamin James Harvey was born in Jarrow on Tyne in 1886. He studied at Elmfield College in York and was commissioned on 28th July 1915. Harvey arrived in France in May 1916 serving as a Second Lieutenant with the 6th battalion. He was awarded the Military Cross for his actions on 15th September 1916 when the 6th and 9th battalions attacked Martinpuich. Harvey served in Y company was under the command of 2.Lieut Arnett who was killed early in the attack. Although wounded, Harvey took over the company and led the attack The Military was announced in the London Gazette with the following citation London Gazette 25th November 1916 '2nd Lt. Benjamin James Harvey, Durh. L.I. For conspicuous gallantry in action. Although wounded, he assumed command of and led his company with great courage and initiative. He set a fine example to his men'. Due to his wounds, he was in England until February 1917, he then returned to France until June 1917. From April 1918 onwards he was with the Ministry of Munitions.
