9CT GOLD MEDAL (c.24.71g) awarded to Henry Chappell FIBP ' Bath Railway Poet' who wrote the popular war poem 'The Day.' The obverse bearing the image of Homer and the reverse engraved. ''Presented to Henry Chappell FIBP by the authors of the hundred best poems on the war - who by their vote is the writer of the best poem in the collection .- Chas F Forshaw LLD - Editor." Henry Chappell day was born in 1874. A Railway porter at Bath Station, he became nationally famous and even came to the attention of The Kaiser when his poem 'The Day' was published in the Daily Express on 22nd August 1914. Throughout the war, his fame grew, and he became acquainted with other famous poets of the time including Rudyard Kipling. He became known as ' Bath Railway Poet.' After the war, he remained out of the public eye and died in 1937 from cancer.
