REUBEN CHAPPELL (1870-1940) A ship's portrait 'S.S. Halton' of Liverpool, watercolour heightened with white, signed lower left, 34cm x 54cm Reuben Chappell is one of Britain's best known and collected ship portrait artists. Born and raised in Goole, Yorkshire, he painted the vessels that came up the Humber to the inland port. In 1904 he moved to Par in Cornwall, where he continued to paint the many vessels that visited the china clay ports. A highly industrious and talented artist, Chappell worked in the tradition known as Pierhead painting, producing works oftten commissioned by the vessel's owner or master
