He joined the Royal Navy in May 1886, serving continually until 1911 when he transferred to the Royal Fleet Reserve. He saw service in the Boer War on-board HMS Powerful a heavy cruiser. Bland also saw service in the Great War; he left the Navy in 1919. He is also entitled to the 1914/15 Star and Victory Medal.
