GORDON RUSSELL: A "HAYRAKE" OAK DINING SUITE Comprising dining table, six walnut side chairs, two carvers and a sideboard buffet, The top of the refectory-type table with six yew-wood and ebony banded panels, above four octagonal notched chamfered legs united by hayrake stretcher, the table 213cm long x 97cm wide x 76cm high, the chairs 101cm high x 60cm wide x 47cm deep (carvers) the two-tier buffet crossbanded with notched and chamfered legs and plain stretcher, designed by S. Gordon Russell, Foreman E. Turner, Cabinet Maker N. Allaway, 146cm wide x 56cm deep x 92cm high Provenance: Believed to have been especially for the vendor's grandfather, Holland W. Hobbiss, a Birmingham-based architect, who had used the Gordon Russell workshop for the interiors of several of his buildings. Hobbiss' work included King Edward's School, the University of Birmingham and he was, for many years, the architect of the diocese of Lichfield.
