					CHARLES CROMWELL INGHAM (1796-1863) Head and shoulders portrait of a young boy, said to be Robert Foster Barnard II, son of John G Barnard and Jane Brand, inscribed verso "Chas. C. Ingham pinxit, August 1855, 384-4th Street, New York", oil on canvas, 49cm x 39cm (oval) John Gross Barnard (1815-1882) was a career engineering officer in the U.S. Army, serving in the Mexican-American War, as the Superintendent of the United States Military Academy and as a General in the Union Army during the Civil War. He was also a distinguished scientist, engineer, mathematician, historian and author. Charles Cromwell Ingham was an Irish born portrait painter and later a founder of the New York National Academy of Design.
