EMPHEMERA AND MEDALLION / FOB GROUP relating to W Thewlis RND, who won the MM & Bar. A Bronze hallmarked Chirton school attendance medal to William Thewlis, presented in 1902 A Bronze hallmarked Chirton school attendance medal to William Thewlis, presented in 1903 A Silver hallmarked Chirton school attendance medal to William Thewlis, presented in 1905 A Silver Football Medal presented to Thewlis on 23rd November 1917, 'Hawke Bn Champions' Silver Fob ' Always Ready' 1919 Chirton Masonic Lodge medal to Bro Wm Thewlis. With brothers RND Silver Fob presented for winning a football match in France in 1918. The group comes with Williams original service papers and numerous other pieces of paper work relating to his life and his families. Such as apprenticeship documents and photographs. The group also comes with a large framed photograph of William. William Thewlis was born in Chirton, North Shields in January 1895. He attended Chirton School before going down the local pit as a Miner. During the Great War he enlisted in the Tyneside Division (TZ), Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve, joining in June 1915. He became a Member of Hawke Bn Royal Naval Division RND. Thewlis first served in Imbros, before transferring to France in mid-1916. He was badly wounded to his left shoulder on 13th November 1916. The wound was so bad he didn't re-join his Bn until May 1917. He was awarded the Military Medal announced in the London Gazette on 24th September 1918 and the Bar on 15th January 1919. He was gassed during the German Spring Offensive in March 1918 and re-joined the Bn in August 1918.
