VIOLET OAKLEY (1874-1960) Portrait of Maxwell Ashby Armfield (1881-1972) depicted half-length, his chin resting on his right hand, pastel and chalk, signed and dated 1928 lower right, 42cm x 27.5cm Violet Oakley was an American artist, the first American woman to receive a public mural commission. During the first quarter of the 20th century she was renowned as a pathbreaker in mural decoration, a field that had been exclusively practiced by men.
