R.W. MARTIN & BROTHERS "GROTESQUE BIRD" JAR AND COVER DATED 2 FEBRUARY 1882 Salt-glazed stoneware. 26cm high (28.5cm including stand) Collar incised with "R.W. Martin.London + Southall. 2-2-82" Top of jar incised to lip "2.2.82 Martin.London" ebonised base incised with R.W. Martin London, paper label "R.W Martin & Bros, Fine Art Potters, 16 Brownlow Street, High Holborn" Provenance: Gifted to the vendors Grandfather and thence descent Private Collection, Surrey Note from vendor: My Grandfather and his family lived in Stratford Road in Southall Middlesex and he became friends with Clement, son of Robert Wallace Martin. I believe my Grandfather was at school with Clement and used to walk along the canal in Southall on his way to and from school and used visit the pottery in Havelock Road on a very regular basis and got to know them well. This "Wally Bird" tobacco jar has been in my family since the day my Grandfather received it as a gift.
