M.T. HLA (1874-1946) A view across the Mandalay Palace moat with the citadel walls and ornate pyatthat's visible, figures going about their daily life to the foreground, signed lower left, watercolour; together with two similar watercolours by the same Artist: one a river scene with a blossoming tree beside buildings and stupas, with a boat on the water, probably the Irrawaddy, to the foreground, signed lower right; the other a tranquil view across water with a golden spire, probably that of the Shwedagon Pagoda breaking the treeline, signed lower right, all 18.5cm x 27.5cm (3) M.T. Hla was an early pioneer of watercolour and oil in the western style in Burma. This adoption of style was due to meeting Sir Gerald Festus Kelly (1879-1972) in the early 1900's
