SET OF FOUR VICTORIAN MAHOGANY AND UPHOLSTERED DINING CHAIRS IN GEORGE III STYLE

Estimate: £400 - £600
Bidding ended. Lot is unsold.
SET OF FOUR VICTORIAN MAHOGANY AND UPHOLSTERED DINING CHAIRS IN GEORGE III STYLE, by T.Willson, 19th century, the backrests with openwork splats relief carved with foliage, ribboning and scrollwork; the front cabriole legs with acanthus carved knees and ball and claw feet, with splayed back legs; later reupholstered, stamped 'T.WILLSON, 68 GREAT QUEEN STREET LONDON', 94cm high, 56cm wide Note: Thomas Willson is entered in directories as a furniture broker and appraiser of 68 Great Queen Street between 1821 and 1829. From 1830-37 the Great Queen Street business was continued by his wife Mary Willson & Son. After 1838 it is listed at the same address as 'Matthew Wilson, furniture warehouse, furniture work, upholsterer', until 1854. The stamps to the these chairs are therefore enigmatic, since they are stylistically very much of the George III period, but certainly of later date. Reproductions of George III styles would perhaps have been fairly uncommon during the 1820s, but the presence of the initial 'T' in the stamp suggests that these chairs might indeed be of that time
