Leonard Gooding was born in Magdalen, Lynn, Norfolk, England in 1816. In civilian life Gooding was a Labourer, he attested aged 21 in 1836 at Norfolk. He had previously deserted from the Royal Artillery.
In July 1845 he was tried by Court Martial for Drunkness. for which he was imprisoned for a short period.
Discharged in September 1855. Having served for nearly 19 years, the reason stated for his discharge papers is that he was no longer physically fit due to suffering from Rheumatism. His aliment developed from standing in the trenches as Sebastopol.
Medal confirmed on the roll but it should also have Sebestapool bar.
Contemporarily engraved in an accepted style - Color - Sergt LeonD Gooding 46th Ft
With original Third Empire Medaille Militaire, enamel intact and gilt still visible
