Cyril James Hembrow was born in Ashford in 1896. He first served with the 1/5th
Seaforth Highlanders, landing in France on May 1st 1915. A fitter by trade, he transferred to the Royal Flying Corps on September 26th 1916, as an Airman Second Class.

Commissioned on April 30th 1918, as a Second Lieutenant, it seems he
served with the 9th battalion Tank Corps before re-joining the RAF. He survived
the war and, in civilian life, worked in an aircraft factory as an
engineer.
