ENGLISH SCHOOL, circa 1627 A portrait of a gentleman

wearing a ruff and holding a tassel with his right hand, bust-length, dated "1627" in the upper left hand corner, oil on canvas laid on panel,
64cm x 52cm, in a later carved giltwood frame with fluting and beading.

Provenance: The Murray family at Polmaise Castle, Cambusbarron, Scotland, and thence by descent.

Some losses and abrasion. Areas of strengthening and re-touching. The canvas laid down on to a later panel. The painting presents well and is in overall good "country house" condition. The fluted and beaded frame is probably late 18th or early 19th century.
