Provenance: Sir James Horlick, 1st Bt. (1844-1921) or his son, Sir James Horlick, OBE MC, 4th Bt. (1886-1972). Sold Dreweatts, Newbury, 10 February 2010, lot 59.

Sir James (d. 1921) was born in Gloucestershire and founded the Horlicks drinks business with his brother in Chicago. He returned to Britain in the early 20th century when he was knighted. His third son, also James, inherited the baronetcy from his older brother Peter on the latter’s death in 1958. For his actions in World War I, Sir James (4th Bt.) was awarded the Military Cross, the Greek Military Cross, the Serbian Order of the White Eagle and was appointed Chevalier de la Legion d’Honneur.  After the Second World War he lived at Achamore House on Gigha, in the Western Isles of Scotland.

There are the inevitable minor dents, marks scratches and shrinkage cracks consistent with age and use. Some small scratches on the top of the central panel. A shrinkage crack on the top of the right panel. Some of the veneer on the legs replaced. The table has been French polished but is not too bright. The metalwork is good quality, appears to be original and is in good condition.
