At the time of the
1841 index, he was serving with 2nd Bn in Quebec, Canada, spending a total of 2
and a half years there. In 1851 he was based in Windsor, London.
During the Crimean
War, Armstrong served with 1st Bn; he was present at the battle of Alma,
Balaklava and Inkermann. He took part in the Siege of Sebastopol.
On the 30th of
April 1855, John passed away from a fever on the voyage home. He was buried at
sea.
