James O'Brien enlisted on the 14th of May, 1851. He was absent without leave for four days from the 9th of September 1852; when he returned on the 14th, he was imprisoned for forty-two days.

 

He served in the Crimean War from the 27th of February 1854 to the 16th of June 1856. His service papers and the roll show his entitlement to the medal and clasps. Service in the Indian Mutiny followed, and he is entitled to the Indian Mutiny Medal, with Relief of Lucknow and Lucknow clasps. 

 

Discharged on 31st March 1866, he joined the 4th Foot of the Army Reserve in Inverness and served with them until 1881.
