Montague Brown - Hovelt was born in Hanger Hill, Ealing, in 1879. At the time of the 1911 census, he was living at 37 Nassan Road, Barnes in Surrey.

Merchant in civilian life, Brown - Hovlet was commissioned from a Cadet on the
18th of March 1918 to a Second Lieutenant in the Army Service corps. He landed
in France on the 5th of April 1918. He survived the war and was discharged on the
3rd of June 1919.
