Robert Sames
Auterac was born on the 2nd of May 1897 in Islington, London. The son of George
Sames and Clara, he attended Christ's Hospital School in Horsham, Sussex. He
was a member of the OTC and immediately after leaving school joined the RNAS as
an Air Mechanic until 13th of October 1915.
On the 16th of
October 1915, Auterac applied for a commission; he was successful and was
commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the 10th Royal Sussex Regiment. He
landed in France on the 24th of July 1916 and was attached to the 28th Company
Machin Gun Corps.
Robert was sadly
killed in action on the 18th of October 1918 on the Somme. He is remembered on
the Thiepval memorial.
