late 19th century, the shaped and carved top with a central brass well flanked by two lidded compartments, one containing a music box, three carved bears mounted above, on a tree carved tripod base with a further climbing bear, 87cm high x 46cm wide x 35.5cm deep

Note: The Black Forest wood carving industry started in Brienz, Switzerland, after a disastrous famine in 1816. The Swiss Government encouraged the wood carving industry as a way of creating jobs and boosting the local economy. Black Forest wood carvings became symbolic of luxury and wealth featuring animals such as bears, eagles, stags, boars and dogs.
