Note: The Black Forest wood carving industry started in Brienz, Switzerland, after a disastrous famine in 1816. The Swiss Government encouraged the wood carving industry as a way of creating jobs and boosting the local economy. Black Forest wood carvings became symbolic of luxury and wealth featuring animals such as bears, eagles, stags, boars and dogs.
