Provenance: Purchased from Clevedon Salerooms Fine Arts Sale, 20th November 2014, Lot 146.

Note: John Alexander Phillips was born at Plymouth Dock in 1790, son of Alexander, a Naval Master, and Ann. He was Midshipman on the HMS Bellisle at Trafalgar aged 15. He transferred to the Royal Marines in 1806, was commissioned as a 2nd Lt on the 26th of August 1806, and rose to rank of Lieut-General. Died 17th November 1865, aged 75.
