the first white ensign to be flown during The Rhine Crossing, the flag itself is over 33.5" x 18.5" and is housed in a frame of 42.5" x 29", a note in the frame dated 7th April 1945 provides the details of the history of the flag in the Rhine Crossing, it also states it was flown over Kweek School in Arnhem

Provenance: Purchased from Clevedon Salerooms Fine Arts Sale, 20th November 2014, Lot 146.

Note: John Alexander Phillips was born at Plymouth Dock in 1790, son of Alexander, a Naval Master, and Ann. He was Midshipman on the HMS Bellisle at Trafalgar aged 15. He transferred to the Royal Marines in 1806, was commissioned as a 2nd Lt on the 26th of August 1806, and rose to rank of Lieut-General. Died 17th November 1865, aged 75.
