In historic country house condition consistent with age and the materials employed.
This sophisticated chair is of high quality with a well-shaped back. The fact that the back legs are also finished is indicative of quality. The colour and patination is good. The front legs have worm damage, particularly at the back of the left hand leg as you look at the chair. The back legs are similarly affected by worm damage and are faded due to exposure to the sun. One leg appears to have been spliced and the other shows more significant worm damage. The chair turns up well and the rails appear to be original (the back secured by hand-forged nails). The frame beneath the upholstery has not been inspected. It is quite possible that it has been strengthened and partly renewed during the last 300 years. The 20th century velvet upholstery is in reasonable condition with some staining.
