CIRCLE OF CHARLES JERVAS (1675-1739) A portrait identified as Peter Waller

of Stalbridge, standing three-quarter length in an interior wearing a red coat, a sword at his side and his right hand resting on a table, a landscape visible beyond, oil on canvas, 125cm x 100cm, apparently retaining the original giltwood and gesso frame

Provenance: Ven House, Milborne Port. Apparently this portrait was sold with Ven in 1957 and purchased back from AW McCaw in 1983. In the Ven inventory of circa 1850 it is stated that the painting belonged to “Mrs Coles”, the granddaughter of the sitter.

In attractive country house condition with heavy relining and later stretchers. The surface with some evidence of retouching associated with the lining and a possible tear (the centre of the canvas measuring approximately 7cm). Some areas of slight paint loss and the craquelure opening up in patches. There is a possibility of further passages of overpaint which are hard to read under a UV lamp.

The period frame is in good country house condition with minor losses and damage consistent with age and the materials.
