A CHARLES II OAK COFFER

the plain hinged top over a frieze carved with scalework and two panels carved with roundels in the Gothic style bearing the date “1667”, on guilloche-carved stile supports, 115.5cm wide x 67.5cm high x 52.5cm deep

Provenance: According to family records, this oak coffer was owned by Mrs HE Monro until 1948 and then passed to NAM in 1964.

In historic country house condition with damage and wear consistent with age. Apparently retaining the original hinges. The lock replaced and the internal box and carrying handles missing. Evidence of black stain which may be an "antiquarian improvement". The bottom of the feet with some staining associated with water.
